No. 1 of 1844 intitled "An
Ordinance to define the Law relating to Slavery in Hong Kong, enacts" that the
Laws of England prohibiting Slavery shall be in
full operation in that Colony with certain exceptions.
If the substance of this enactment were unobjectionable, it might be of comparatively little importance to notice the inaccuracy of the words "the Laws of England prohibits Slavery" — the only Law containing any such prohibition being a Law of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. But it is of much more importance to object that this Ordinance directly asserts that, independently of this Local Act, Slavery would be lawful in Hong Kong. So manifestly is this the meaning that, by the 3rd section, the exception already mentioned provides, that, if any Foreigner shall bring within the Colony
